There’s good news to share regarding one of our Academy players, as Harry Clayton has recently been accepted onto a football scholarship course in the United States of America.

After captaining the Saints to glory in the ECFA Men’s Premier Cup last season, the defender will soon be moving across the Atlantic to begin the next chapter of his footballing journey at Iowa’s William Penn University.

Harry began his journey with The New Saints at U16s level and has played a key role in the Academy’s success throughout his three years at the club. During the 2023/24 season, he featured in the Saints’ U19s squad that clinched the Cymru Premier Development League title – their first in seven years.

In August 2024, the defender made his first-team debut in his side’s 4-1 Nathaniel MG Cup victory against Flint Town United, before making history just a month later by becoming one of the first-ever TNS players to represent the club in the prestigious UEFA Youth League.

“I’ve really enjoyed my three years at The New Saints and the two years I’ve spent at North Shropshire College,” Harry said.

“There have been some amazing people who have helped me along the way, such as all the coaches I’ve worked with, all the players I’ve played with, all the backroom staff at the club, as well as all of the tutors at college.

“Without these people, I doubt that I would have been able to get a place out in the US. I’m really looking forward to going out and I can’t wait to get started.

“Thank you to everyone at TNS and North Shropshire College for the help you have given me.”

As part of the club’s scholarship programme, which had been running in association with North Shropshire College since 2003, Harry recently completed his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science, which is designed to prepare students for a future career in the sport, fitness, and health industry.

The course offers students the opportunity to pursue a football education alongside their academic studies and has produced several success stories over the years, including Scott Quigley and Billy Kirkman, both of whom went on to join clubs in the English Football League.

“I am delighted for Harry, and he is thoroughly deserving of this fantastic opportunity,” said Performance Phase Manager Greg Draper.

“His attitude and performances, especially over the last 12 months, have played a crucial role in the team’s success this year.

“He has been a pleasure to work with, and I have no doubt he will continue to have a very successful spell in the USA.”
