After having their scheduled away league trip to Airbus UK Broughton Reserves the previous Friday postponed, The New Saints Reserves’ return to action saw them keep their title hopes alive as they stormed to a 7-0 home win over Denbigh Town Reserves in their FAW Reserve League North East clash at Park Hall Stadium on Friday night.
Saints had gone into the game in 3rd place in the table, a point behind 2nd placed Connah’s Quay Nomads Under 18s with leaders Flint Mountain Reserves a further 8 points ahead, albeit with Saints having 3 games in hand over Nomads and 4 in hand over Flint Mountain.
Meanwhile, Denbigh Town Reserves went into the game on the back of a 7-1 home league win over Mold Alexandra Reserves the previous Friday, which was their 2nd straight win after previously enduring a 5 game winless run since a 3-2 home league win over St Asaph Reserves on 9th November.
That win over Mold plus results elsewhere the same weekend had left Denbigh in 6th place in the table, a point ahead of 7th placed Ruthin Town Reserves with 8th placed Holywell Town Development a further point behind, albeit with Ruthin having 2 games in hand over both Denbigh and Holywell.
Saints opened their account in the 9th minute through Ryan Astles, who marked his return to action after a long injury lay-off with a goal.
Alfie Webb doubled Saints’ lead in the 35th minute and after Ollie Mirceta-Jones had made it 3-0 in the 38th minute, the goal rush continued with Lewis Wynne making it 4-0 in the 40th minute to give the hosts a comfortable half time lead.
Saints made a double change at half time with Olly Cameron coming on to replace Marceta-Jones and Jack Sutcliffe coming on to replace Astles.
After Charlie Horton had made it 5-0 in the 53rd minute, Saints made a change in the 56th minute when Thomas Broadhurst came on to replace Webb.
Denbigh made their first change in the 61st minute when Joe Mead came on to replace Ossian Jones before the visitors made their second change in the 66th minute when Aled Hughes came on to replace Aled Jones.
Lewis Wynne scored his second of the night to take the tally to 6-0 in the 75th minute and after both sides had made a change in the 84th minute with Liam Nash coming on to replace Morgan Fricker for Denbigh and Greg Draper coming on to replace Horton for Saints, Draper wrapped up the scoring to make it 7-0 in the 89th minute.
With Connah’s Quay Nomads U18s winning 3-1 at home to Mold Alexandra Reserves the same night, Saints remain in 3rd place in the table a point behind Nomads but with 3 games in hand over the Deeside outfit.
