Having lifted the Nathaniel MG Cup (Welsh League Cup) in January last year – beating Swansea City 5-1 in the process – The New Saints has already navigated one hurdle this time round, with an identical scoreline against Flint Town United in the second round.

The defence of the title continues on Tuesday (September 17), when we play another Flintshire side, this time JD Cymru North high-fliers, Airbus UK Broughton, in the third round of the competition.

The second-tier Welsh side has, like The New Saints, registered a 100% start to their league season. While the former has won all four of their opening games, the latter have double that figure, scoring 27 goals in the process and conceding five from their eight matches.

The Wingmakers have already played twice in this season’s Nathaniel MG Cup, beating Mold Alexandra at home 3-2 in round one, followed by a 4-1 victory on the road against Gresford Athletic.

Launched in 1992, coinciding with the inaugural season of the League of Wales, the Welsh League Cup has been won by The New Saints on ten occasions. Airbus UK Broughton has yet to reach a final.

Having been beaten on just the one occasion as far as the final is concerned, that was in the 2012/2013 season, when Carmarthen Town won 3-1 on penalties.

Goals from Steve Evans, Sam Finley and Mike Wilde for the Saints meant that the game (3-3) went to extra-time initially, before the lottery of the penalty shootout.

On Tuesday, Airbus will be in all-blue and the visitors in green and white hooped shirts, green shorts and socks.

The respective goalkeepers will be wearing all-yellow and all-turquoise.

Siôn Davies will officiate the game and he will be assisted by Jamie Monk and Laura Roberts. James Walker is the fourth official.

Once again, the action will be steamed on TNS TV, which is free-to-view for anyone outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
