The New Saints Women are pleased to announce Yasmin Evans as new club captain for the 2024/25 season.
22-year-old Evans inherits the role from Beth Lewis, who departed the club earlier this summer after three years of excellent service.
The defensive midfielder returned to Park Hall in July having spent the last four years on a football scholarship with West Virginia State University, and enjoyed a previous spell with The Saints in the 2019-20 campaign.
Unfortunately, however, just two weeks after the start of pre-season training, Evans picked up an ACL injury, meaning the new club captain is likely to miss most, if not all, of the season. Yas has been working exceptionally hard behind the scenes, and will undergo surgery next month.
As a result, Shauna Duffy has taken the decision to also name a new team captain, with that role falling to long-serving midfielder, Lia Lewis.
Dating back to 2016, The Saints’ number 34 has made more than 150 appearance for the club, allowing her to lean on her extensive experience to help drive the on-pitch standards in an exciting season for The New Saints.
Wales international Maria Francis-Jones, another of Duffy’s 11 summer signings, has assumed the role of vice-captain.
The Saints’ new club captain, Yasmin Evans said: “It’s a really proud moment for me to be named as the new club captain of The New Saints Women.
“While I’m obviously very disappointed to be missing the majority of the season, I’ll be doing everything I possibly can to support the girls over the next few months in what promises to be a really exciting campaign.”
Lia Lewis added: “While I was obviously sad to learn about Yas’ injury, I was delighted to accept the opportunity to become team captain in her absence. I still lean on Yas for support, along with Maria, and between the three of us we are honoured to lead this side.
“It’s going to be an exciting season, as it’s our first as a semi-professional team, and we can’t wait to get going in a few weeks’ time.
“Finishing fifth last year was disappointing for everyone, so we’ll be working hard to make sure we better that this time around.”
The New Saints Women play their first game of the 2024/25 Genero Adran Premier season this coming Sunday (September 15th) when they travel to Barry Town United.
