Defeat at Barry

It was a difficult Sunday afternoon in South Wales, as The New Saints Women lost 3-0 to Barry Town United in the second game of phase two in the Genero Adran Premier at Jenner Park.

Angharad Beman netted a brace, while India Shanahan scored the other goal for the Linnets. 

Sunday’s result sees The New Saints drop below Barry Town by two points in the battle for the Plate.

A tough first-half

All the goals came in the first 45 of the encounter against Barry.

Beman opened the scoring for the hosts from a corner whipped in by skipper, Chloe Tiley, that found 19-year-old, Beman the box, who headed the ball in from close range.

Shanahan then netted from 20-yards out, with Beman scoring a brace from a corner just before the break for the hosts to lead 3-0 at half-time.

Clean sheet in the second 45

The second-half was a lot better than the first, particularly from a defensive point of view by not conceding a goal.

It’s the third time that Ellie Suckley has kept the opposition’s attack at bay during a 45 played for the senior team.

All the experience Suckley has been getting at the top level in Wales during this season will certainly put her in good stead for the future.

Injuries

After Caitlin Chapman went off in the first-half yesterday, there were five players that would usually be in the starting line-up missing in the second 45.

Missing five of the 11 that usually play makes a difference to any team in World football.

If all the players that were missing in the second-half yesterday are available and well for the majority if not all of next season, results like the one against Barry yesterday will certainly be different.

Still in the fight for the Plate

There is still a chance for silverware at the end of this season, as The Saints are just two points behind Barry in the battle for the Adran Premier Plate.

It’s still in Greg Draper’s team’s hands, with a win in each of the last four games enough to top the other teams battling for that position to lift the Plate come the end of this season’s campaign.

The first home game of phase two in the Adran Premier is this Sunday (March 24th), with Cardiff Met the visitors to Park Hall Stadium.
