With a couple of excellent knockout competition results in the last two games, that saw The New Saints beat Swansea City 5-1 in the Nathaniel MG Cup final and Falkirk FC 1-0 in the semi-final of the SPFL Trust Trophy, it’s back to JD Cymru Premier action tomorrow (Tuesday, February 6) for Craig Harrison’s side.
The MD23 encounter with Newtown AFC marks the return of Scott Ruscoe to Welsh football. From long-serving player to assistant manager and then manager, Ruscoe has already made an indelible mark, not only at The New Saints in particular but also in Welsh football overall.
Now the manager of the Robins, his first competitive game in charge is a first v fifth encounter, with the visitors looking to get their season back on track.
Sitting comfortably in third spot at the start of December last year, four consecutive defeats has seen Newtown fall behind in the race for European places.
On the other hand, The New Saints’ excellent start to the campaign continues, with the unbeaten run of thirty-four games in all competitions ensuring that the club has already secured one trophy and is still on target for three more.
The league leaders enjoy a healthy lead at the top of the JD Cymru Premier, with not only a gap of fourteen points over second-placed Connah’s Quay Nomads, but also a game in hand.
The New Saints and Newtown have already met twice this season, with the former winning 2-0 on the road in November and 3-1 at Park Hall last month.
Tuesday’s fixture will see The New Saints take to the field in green and white hooped shirts, green shorts and socks. The visitors will be in all-red and the goalkeepers all-sky blue and all-black respectively.
Cheryl Foster will referee the game and she will be assisted by Ceri Williams and Richard Dolphin. Aaron Wyn Jones is the fourth official and Rodger Gifford the referee observer.
