The New Saints will begin their defence of the JD Welsh Cup on the road against Ruthin Town, tonight’s second-round draw has revealed. 

The draw was made at Dragon Park in Newport, with The Saints – ball 31 – and Ruthin – ball 29 – paired together by former Welsh youth international, Phoebe Poole, and Lowri Roberts, Head of Women and Girls’ Football at the FAW.

Playing their football in the JD Cymru North, the Town have made a mixed start to their domestic season, winning two, drawing two, and losing two of their opening six matches. 

Like The Saints, this will be their first fixture in this season’s competition, with all JD Cymru Premier, and a number of Cymru North and South clubs, receiving byes in the first round.   

Second-round matches are scheduled to be played on either Friday 14th or Saturday 15th October, however, that could be subject to change due to The Saints’ involvement in the SPFL Trust Trophy. 

Current holders of the trophy, The New Saints have won the JD Welsh Cup nine times, and have also finished runners-up on three occasions.

The last time Craig Harrison’s side tasted defeat in the competition was in March 2018 when they were defeated 2-1 by Connah’s Quay Nomads at the Deeside Stadium.
