Changes in the starting line-up
There were a number of changes from the game against Connah’s Quay Nomads last Friday and notably there were two in particular that stood out.
Gwion Dafydd, although he’s made several appearances from the bench this season, started his first game for The New Saints. He got us off to an excellent start as well, finding the net in the fourth minute.
It was also great to see Ash Baker back on the pitch. He played a good 2/3 of the game as well, which was positive news, as he comes back from injury.
Ben Clark hat-trick
We all know what Ben Clark is capable of as far as goals are concerned and it’s never a surprise when the young midfielder finds the net.
To witness him score his first professional hat-trick though, was very special indeed.
Coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, seconds later he scored. Within twenty minutes he had added another two.
No guesses who we interviewed after the game.
Goals spread throughout the side
There were five different names on the scoresheet come the final whistle. In addition to Ben, Gwion Dafydd, Adam Wilson, Dan Williams and Danny Redmond all found the back of the net.
This is what makes The New Saints so difficult to play against, the goals can come from anywhere. Four of the seven came from substitutes.
Young talent
We can forget sometimes, due to his maturity, that Ben is still a young player. He certainly acts as an inspiration for those coming through the club though.
In with the second-half substitutes in the game against Airbus UK Broughton were Jake Canavan and Billy Kirkman. Both contributed and neither, as always, looked out of their depth. The talent that we have at Park Hall is impressive.
Captains
As well as praising the young talent, we also have an abundance of experienced professionals at Park Hall. With team captain, Chris Marriott, not involved today it was Jon Routledge who wore the armband.
When he was substituted, Adrian Cieslewicz stepped up. Then, when he was replaced it was Danny Redmond’s turn.
All four, courtesy of their maturity and leadership, are worthy of the title of captain.
To have three of them all functioning in the role though in one game isn’t something you see every week.
