Not the result that we wanted

We knew that it would be a tough game but, with the current run of domestic form that The New Saints is enjoying, the confidence level was good ahead of the encounter with Dundee FC.

However, two goals in as many minutes at the start of the second period, and another in added time, meant that Craig Harrison’s side suffered its heaviest defeat of the season.

The result means that for the third time on the bounce, TNS exits the SPFL Trust Trophy at the first hurdle.

All in September, with both previous games as a result of a penalty shootouts, we were beaten by Stenhousemuir in 2019 and Queen’s Park the previous year.

 

What about the performance?

Dundee dominated the opening fifteen minutes or so of the game, but The New Saints rode the storm and looked far more composed for the remainder of the first-half.

Obviously, the two aforementioned goals weren’t on the radar as the visitors established a comfortable lead.

Naturally not happy with the result, but in the post-match interview with Craig Harrison we asked him about the performance in the first question.

If only

None of us need reminding of how tight things are in football.

Fine margins.

If only Ryan Astles’ header had hit the back of the net instead of the bar.

If only Dan Williams’ superb goal-bound strike from outside the box wasn’t met by an equally impressive save from the ‘keeper.

Although 2-0 down at the time, we all know just how quickly one goal can change the whole nature of a game.

If only.

 

Josh Daniels

Brought to the club as a winger, Josh came on at Pontypridd Town recently, replacing Danny Davies who picked up an injury.

He looked a natural – he also featured in that position for Shrewsbury Town on occasions – and impressed to the extent that he was in from the off in the following game against Cardiff Met FC.

He also started yesterday in the same position.

A great addition to the squad from this season, Josh is demonstrating the importance of versatility.

Our captain has featured in the talking points articles on a number of occasions this season – and with good reason.

Following the Dundee defeat, where we exited the SPFL Trust Trophy, conceded three goals, scored none and didn’t have any obvious player that we could interview, who do you go for?

It’s where maturity, not only as the senior player at the club but also as an individual as well, comes in.

Post-match can be a very emotive time for players and staff alike, which is why you go for a calm, cool and collected choice.

If it’s defeats we’re talking about though, let’s hope that we don’t do many more interviews with Mazza this season.
