This afternoon, Shrewsbury Town Women hosted The New Saints FC Women in a friendly. The game was played on the 3G community pitch, alongside the stadium at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Although both sides probed for early domination, fifteen minutes into the encounter and neither ‘keeper was tested.

In the 23rd minute though, the deadlock was broken, as Lexie Harrison’s ball in from the right was met by Lucie Platt, who finished in style.

Just before the break, the home side threatened from two corners in quick succession.

A clearance from inside the six-yard box though, as well as a great save from Sarah Parkes pushing the ball away to her right, saw The New Saints survive, as the half-time whistle went.

Eight minutes into the second period and Lucie Platt’s chip from the right struck one post and then the other before the ‘keeper gathered.

Just two minutes later and Shrewsbury were level, when a defensive mix-up resulted in a well-struck shot that ended up in the back of the net.

A fine save from Parkes, just past the two-thirds stage of the game, denied the hosts the lead, as she dived bravely at the feet of the incoming player.

A minute later, it was the TNS goalkeeper again to the rescue, this time saving to her right at close-range.

She was unable to prevent the goal that put Shrewsbury in the driving seat, however, as a good ball in was chipped over the number one and into the net.

The goal, with twenty minutes to go, proved to be the winner, as Shrewsbury Town Women beat The New Saints FC Women 2-1.
