25 years ago today, Llansantffraid FC pulled off one of the biggest shocks in Welsh domestic football history, as they triumphed on penalties against Barry Town in the Welsh Cup final.

At the time, The Linnets were the only full-time team in the League of Wales and had already comfortably secured the 1995/1996 edition of the trophy some weeks earlier, by a huge margin of 17 points.

Going into the game, 12th placed Llansantffriad, who’d ended the league campaign 45 points below their opponents were written off by most, but sensationally took the lead three times across normal and extra-time. Barry pegged them back on each occasion though, and forced a penalty shootout in the last-ever final to be played at the National Stadium.

Again Ffraid took the lead, racing into a 2-0 advantage after the opening four spot-kicks, before their failure to convert either of their next two allowed the team from Jenner Park to level one more time.

But it was goalkeeper, Andy Mulliner, who proved to be the ultimate hero, as he bounced back from scoring an own goal to deny Dave Withers in sudden death and secure, not just the unlikeliest of victories, but also the Welsh Cup trophy for his team.

As a result of their victory, Graham Breeze’s side secured qualification to the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup – their first-ever appearance in continental football – and went on to face Polish outfit, Ruch Chorzów.
