Saints Women hit Pontypridd for six at Park Hall

The New Saints Women returned to winning ways with a 6-1 victory over Pontypridd United at Park Hall Stadium in the Genero Adran Premier.

Caitlin Chapman and Chantelle Teare netted braces, with Kay Baker and Grace Thomas also getting on the scoresheet. The visitors had a consolation at the end of the opening half through Madison Lloyd.

The win moves The New Saints up to third on nine points in the Adran Premier table, and continues the host’s 100% home win record.

The New Saints started off brightly and took the lead in the 5th minute, when Pontypridd United goalkeeper, Alysha Hawkins, played the ball straight to Gibraltar international, Caitlin Chapman, who netted past Hawkins’ bottom-left from a few yards out.

A second goal came for Jodie Williams’ team two minutes on, as skipper, Lia Lewis, played a through ball to Chapman, and the number 17 calmly slotted the ball past Hawkins.

The best goal was to come in the 17th minute, as Chantelle Teare netted a screamer from 30-yards away into the top corner.

Soon on, Wales international, Maria Francis-Jones, put in a corner that found Mia Davies at the near post, and the header went wide.

The chances kept coming, as moments on a Zara Gibbs through ball found Lewis in the box, where the captain hit a shot inches wide.

A fourth came for the Genero Adran Trophy holders in the 24th minute. Kelsey Richardson played in a corner that found centre-half, Kay Baker, who headed the ball in at the back post.

Pontypridd had their first opportunity of the match in the 34th minute, when Jemima Lister played a ball to Madison Lloyd, but the forward failed to convert with the shot blasting over the crossbar.

The visitors got a goal back seconds before the break. Nicole Fenton thread ball into Lloyd, and the 18-year-old scored past Mackenzie Haydn-Jones’ bottom-left from just inside the penalty area.

At there start of the second 45, Chapman got a shot away inside the 18-yard area, however Hawkins was there to make a decent save at the near post.

Saints were knocking on the door for a fifth In the 52nd minute, when Teare crossed a ball to Lewis, who’s shot was deflected wide.

TNS found goal number five in 80th minute, as substitute, Grace Thomas, went around Hawkins and slotted the ball in from a tight angle.

Teare got a brace and a sixth for the hosts soon on. A Teare strike found the top of the net for a second time in the match from just outside the box.

In the dying moments of the game, Thomas had a chance from close range, but Hawkins made a good save at the near post.

The Oswestry-based team are back at Park Hall next week, as Williams’ side welcome Swansea City to Park Hall.
