Saints Women put four past Dragons to stay top of Plate standings

The New Saints Women moved one step closer to clinching the Genero Adran Premier Plate after a 4-0 win over Pontypridd United at Park Hall Stadium.

Chantelle Teare netted a hat-trick, while Mel Barlow scored the other for the Oswestry team.

One more victory from the last two games in the Plate will secure silverware for TNS.

The New Saints made a great start to the game, as Greg Draper’s team took the lead in the ninth minute. Evie Williams played a fantastic cross into Chantelle Teare, who scored at the near post, who scored past Klaudia Wojtyczka’s bottom-right corner.

Another chance came for The Saints in the 13th minute, where Mel Barlow had an effort from 35-yards out that just went over the crossbar.

A Saints second came not long later, with Mel Barlow having a mishit that led to the ball falling to Teare, who powered the ball home from 12-yards out. 

Past the half-hour, Pontypridd United had their first shot on target, as Erin Murray had an effort from just outside the box that was stopped by Ellie Suckley.

Moments on, Grace Dunkerley almost scored a wonderful effort from 25-yards away, with Wojtyczka caught off her line, however the opportunity just went wide of the goal.

In the 39th minute, Emily Ridge came close to getting TNS’ third. Teare played a great ball to the number 35, who hit the post from just inside the 18-yard-area.

A third did arrive for Draper’s side at the of the first-half, as Barlow intercepted the ball off the Dragons defence from 20-yards out and scored into the top corner of the net.

At the start of the second 45, Dunkerley hit a shot from 20-yards out that Wojtyczka managed to stop. 

A fourth came for the hosts in the 64th minute, with a terrific over-the-top ball from Izzy Redding that found Teare, who ran round around Wojtyczka to score into an empty net for a hat-trick.

Before the end, Pontypridd almost got a consolation, with substitute, Clare Daley, having a shot that went over from close range.

Evie Manders wasn’t far off a Saints fifth at the other end of the pitch from an effort inside the penalty area in dying moments of the match, but Wojtyczka palmed the ball away to keep out the 17-year-old’s attempt.

TNS are next in action at Park Hall this Sunday, March 31st against Barry Town United.
