Saints Women defeat Seasiders following Park Hall fireworks

The New Saints Women claimed a big three points against Aberystwyth Town at Park Hall Stadium in an entertaining 4-3 victory in the Genero Adran Premier.

Gavin Allen’s side initially took a two-goal lead through strikes from Gwenllian Jones and Imogen Scourfield, before a Caitlin Chapman brace, a Beth Lewis penalty, and a Ella Hartley shot gave The New Saints a 4-2 advantage. Substitute, Niamh Duggan got a third for the visitors late on in added time through a 35-yard free-kick.

The result moves The Saints up to fourth in the Adran Premier table.

The New Saints Women had the majority of the ball early on, as Chantelle Teare had an effort from range in the 12th minute that was gathered by Margot Farnes. 

Gavin Allen’s team took the lead with a breakaway goal in the 14th minute, where Amy Jenkins played a through ball to Gwenllian Jones, who slotted an effort past Mackenzie Haydn-Jones from close range.

Greg Draper’s team were back up the other end of the pitch moments after kick-off, as Caitlin Chapman whipped in a corner that found Izzy Redding in the box, but the centre-half couldn’t convert the ball into the net.

The Seasiders almost got a second goal in the 24th minute. A pass was played through to Lleucu Mathias, who shot from from six-yards out, but the effort was denied thanks to a fine stop from Haydn-Jones.

Past the half-hour mark, Beth Lewis played in a cross that found Emily Ridge, and the forward had a header at the Aberystwyth net as Farnes caught the ball.

The Saints came close to a leveller in the 39th minute, as Chapman played in a corner that found Teare, who had a header at the net, but Farnes made the catch.

On the stroke on half-time, Chapman put in a cross that connected with Teare, who hit the effort just wide of the near post.

Aberystwyth Town took a two-goal lead in the 53rd minute, as Rebecca Mathias put in a free-kick that found Imogen Scourfield in the box, and the number 16 headed past Haydn-Jones’ left.

TNS got a goal back moments on, as Chapman netted past Farnes’ bottom-right from inside the 18-yard area.

The Oswestry-based team found an equaliser just before the hour mark through a penalty that was given after an Aber defender got a hand on the ball. Beth Lewis stepped up straight after and converted the spot-kick by sending the penalty into the bottom-right corner.

In the 69th minute, TNS took the lead, as Ella Hartley hit a shot from outside the box that went into the keeper’s bottom-right corner.

Not long later, Aberystwyth substitute, Gwenllian Mason, almost levelled for the away team from an effort inside the box that went inches wide off the post.

TNS got a fourth just into added time, as Chapman whipped in a ball from outside the box that ended up going into the net.

The Seasiders netted a third goal deep into added time, as substitute, Niamh Duggan scored a free-kick from 35-yards away, which went in off the crossbar. TNS managed to hold on to the lead claiming a crucial three points.

Draper’s side are next in action against Y Felinheli in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup on Sunday, November 12th at Park Hall.
