The New Saints put in a superb performance at Park Hall this afternoon to claim an emphatic 6-0 victory over third-placed Penybont.

A hat-trick from Rory Holden saw the midfielder scoop both the match ball and the Player of the Match award, while Jordan Williams, Ryan Brobbel and Ben Wilson were also on target in the win.

Craig Harrison’s side increased their advantage at the top of the table to 10 points as a result, and also made it four consecutive league victories.

Chances were few and far between in the early stages at Park Hall, with both teams battling to gain the ascendancy.

With 16 minutes gone, however, visiting goalkeeper Luke Armstrong came to his side’s rescue to keep out a powerful strike from Jordan Williams that looked destined for the back of the net.

In the 22nd minute, Craig Harrison’s side did eventually find the opening goal, although it took them three attempts to do so.

After an initial strike from Isaac Jefferies was saved by the goalkeeper, Rory Holden’s follow-up was then cleared off the line, before the JD Cymru Premier’s leading goalscorer, Jordan Williams, hammered home the loose ball from inside the six-yard box.

The league leaders doubled their advantage just four minutes later, with Holden himself getting in on the act.

Controlling the ball with a superb first touch inside the penalty area, the number 18 gave the goalkeeper no chance as he sent a powerful volley in off the crossbar.

It could’ve been three for the Saints in the 35th minute when Holden cut the ball back for the arriving Eoin Farrell. Taking the shot first time, the midfielder’s effort flew high over Armstrong’s crossbar.

Harrison’s side were therefore forced to settle for a two-goal half-time lead, but they were back in scoring form just two minutes after the restart.

An effort from the edge of the box by Ryan Brobbel took a wicked deflection off Joe Woodiwiss, with the ball nestling into the back of the net as the goalkeeper was rooted to the spot.

The Saints grabbed their fourth of the afternoon in the 52nd minute after a well-worked corner routine from the left.

Brobbel’s short corner was flicked into the path of Holden by Dan Williams, and the former Port Vale man calmly stroked the ball through a crowded six-yard box and beneath the goalkeeper.

The margin of victory could have been even greater were it not for Armstrong in the Penybont goal, who continued to perform admirably. In the 59th minute, the Wales Under-21 international pulled off another smart stop to deny substitute Adam Wilson.

With both sides making changes, the momentum was disrupted somewhat in the second half, although Craig Harrison did hand a debut to new signing Dan Barton in the 64th minute.

Eleven minutes from time, Rory Holden made it an afternoon to remember as he completed his hat-trick with TNS’ fifth goal. Receiving the ball from Adam Wilson inside the area, he made no mistake in sending a right-footed effort into the bottom-right corner.

The scoring wasn’t finished there either. Holden turned provider in the 87th minute, slotting the ball across the face of goal for Ben Wilson to tap home from just outside the six-yard box.

It was the Saints’ joint-biggest league win of the season and sent them 10 points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier table with just eight games remaining.

Harrison’s side are back in league action this coming Friday (February 13th), when they travel to Colwyn Bay. Kick-off at The Blue Turtle Arena is scheduled for 7:45pm.
