Saints edge closer to title after 2-1 victory against Caernarfon Town

The New Saints defeated Caernarfon Town 2-1 at Park Hall to move 15 points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier.

Danny Redmond gave his side the lead with just 10 minutes on the clock, but former TNS man Brad Young sent the sides in level at the break with his first Canaries goal in the 45th minute.

But record-signing Ben Wilson restored his side’s advantage with a second-half header, setting the Saints on their way to a sixth consecutive victory.

It took just 10 minutes for the opening goal to arrive at Park Hall, with The New Saints the side to make the breakthrough.

Captain Danny Redmond was the man on target, as he found the bottom corner with a volleyed effort after Phillip Mooney failed to get enough distance on his headed clearance.

There was a chance for Craig Harrison’s side to double their advantage in the 29th minute when Jacob Owen made a good run down the right.

The former Haverfordwest County man sent an inviting cross into the penalty area, but leading goalscorer Jordan Williams couldn’t quite get his head to the ball at the back post.

Williams was involved again in the 41st minute, and were it not for a superb one-handed save from former TNS goalkeeper Connor Roberts, he would’ve scored his 25th goal of the season with a powerful effort that looked destined for the top corner.

But disaster struck for the Saints just moments before the break when another former player, Brad Young, got goal side of Harrison McGahey at the near post to poke home an equaliser.

Things took a while to get going again following the restart, but in the 53rd minute, the Saints had an opportunity to restore their advantage.

Despite Ben Wilson cutting the ball back for Rory Holden who was arriving into the penalty area, the midfielder applied too much power to his first-time strike, and the effort cleared the crossbar as a result.

Just five minutes later though, it was Wilson himself celebrating, as he headed his side back in front after finding space at the back post following a good run and cross from Redmond.

With 73 minutes on the clock, the visitors could’ve hit back again through yet another TNS man, but Danny Gosset’s effort from just outside the box went behind off the crossbar.

Moments later, Jack Edwards made an important stop to deny Rio Owen down to his right as the Canaries continued to search for a way back into the match.

Despite the late pressure, the away side were unable to find an equaliser, and as a result, the Saints picked up their sixth consecutive victory in the JD Cymru Premier.

It’s a departure from league action for Craig Harrison’s side next weekend, as they head to the DragonBet Stadium to face Barry Town United in the final of the Nathaniel MG Cup.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5:30pm on Saturday, February 28th, with The New Saints bidding to win the trophy for a third consecutive season.
