Saints Women defeated by Swansea City at Llandarcy

The New Saints Women suffered a 4-0 loss away at Llandarcy Academy of Sport against Swansea City to remain on 16 points in the Genero Adran Premier.

Stacey John-Davis netted a brace, while Katy Hosford, Samantha Wynne, and Chloe Chivers also got on the scoresheet for Chris Church’s team.

Sunday afternoon’s result means it is likely that the final game of phase one against Aberystwyth Town at Park Avenue in two weeks time may well decide who gets the final spot in the Championship Conference. 

In the opening moments of the game, Katy Hosford had a chance for the hosts from inside the box that narrowly went wide of Ellie Suckley’s far post.

In the fifth minute, Hosford came close again, as the Swans skipper had shot from outside the box that narrowly went wide of the post.

Moments on, Swansea City did take the lead, as Robyn Pinder played as pass through to Hosford, who slotted the ball past Suckley’s bottom-right from inside the 18-yard-area.

Chris Church’s team took a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute, where Samantha Wynn played a through to Stacey John-Davis, with the winger the getting on the end of the pass and slotting the ball past Suckley from 12-yards out.

In the 20th minute, The New Saints had their first chance of the game. Swansea goalkeeper, Chelsea Herbert, gave the ball straight to Ella Hartley, who had a shot from outside the ball that Herbert managed to stop.

Swansea were back up the other end of the pitch moments on, as full-back, Lucy Finch, had an effort from outside the penalty area that powered wide of the net.

Finch had another effort from close range just past the half-hour mark, as she hit the ball from six-yards out, which Suckley tipped over the crossbar.

Before half-time, John-Davis had a shot from range, but Suckley was there to stop the attempt from the number 21.

Just short of the hour, Swansea got a third. A corner ball was whipped into the box, which Suckley couldn’t gather, and Wynne netted from point-blank range.

In the 69th minute, The Saints almost got a goal back, as Emily Ridge crossed the ball into Elizabeth Watson, who struck the ball over the crossbar from a few yards out.

Church’s side were back up the other end of the pitch moments on, with John-Davis hitting the crossbar following a corner.

Swansea got a fourth in the 74th minute, as John-Davis stole the ball from Izzy Redding, and the 31-year-old netted past Suckley’s bottom-left from just inside the box.

The Saints had a chance late on through Ridge, who got around the keeper and shot, with a clearance off the line from Stephanie Turner to stop the goal.

A fifth came for the Swans in the 85th minute, where Hosford played a pass across the box to substitute, Chloe Chivers, who powered the ball into the net from inside the box to round off the game.

Draper’s side are next in action away at Aberystwyth Town in the final game of phase one in the Genero Adran Premier on Sunday, February 11th.
