Saints Women stun Swans at Llandarcy

It was a result to remember on Sunday afternoon at Llandarcy Academy of Sport, as The New Saints Women defeated Swansea City Women 5-0 in the Genero Adran Premier.

Chantelle Teare netted a hat-trick, while Caitlin Chapman and Maria Francis-Jones also found the back of the net.

It is the first time Swansea City have lost in the Genero Adran Premier this season, and also a first victory at Llandarcy for The New Saints.

Three points in South Wales see The Saints move up to second in the Adran Premier table on goal  difference.

The New Saints Women took the lead early on in the fifth minute, as Caitlin Chapman intercepted the ball off Wales international, Nia Jones, down the right-hand side of the pitch, and a cross ended up going into the net over Opal Rayner.

Swansea City were on the front foot moments on, with a Danielle Broadhurst effort from inside the box going over the crossbar.

In the 12th minute, The Saints went 2-0 up. Chantelle Teare made a good run into the 18-yard area, cut inside and slotted the ball past Rayner’s bottom-left.

It was almost a third seconds on, where Molly Havard had  a long-distance effort that narrowly went wide.

Before the half-hour mark, Swans went seeking for a goal back, with a Katy Hosford corner finding Lucy Finch, who shot from close-range, but was denied by a fantastic Becca Elliott save.

Shauna Duffy’s team went up the other end of the pitch to go 3-0 up in the 36th minute. Chapman made a great cross in the box that found Teare, who managed to header the ball into the net from close distance.

Before half-time, Jamie Sherwood’s team had an attempt at the TNS net, as a ball that was whipped in from the right-hand side found John-Davis, who had a header in the penalty area that was caught by Elliott.

A fourth almost came at the start of the second 45, where Helen Evans hit a free-kick from 25-yards out that hit the crossbar, with a Lia Lewis follow-up ending up into the hands of Rayner.

Duffy’s side’s fourth did come in the 75th minute, as Chapman played a pass across the box to Francis-Jones, who slotted the ball into the corner of the net from close-range.

The Oswesty-based team had another good effort a couple of minutes on, as substitute, Lexi Jones, played a great through ball to Teare, the forward shot inside the box, but Rayner made the save.

A fifth arrived in the 82nd minute, as Teare secured her hat-trick with a screamer from 30-yards away. A shot from the 23-year-old went over Rayner and into the net.

Another chance came very close to going in during stoppage time, where a Francis-Jones free-kick hit the crossbar.

TNS will be on the road again next week, as it is a trip to the Llŷn Peninsula to take on Pwllheli in the opening round of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup.
