Against all the odds
Ahead of the Conference League game against Astana, the UEFA website statistics listed a win for The New Saints as a 25% probability, a draw at 18%, while the visitors from Kazakhstan were in the driving seat with 57%.
Although betting odds were different, as they are based on other factors, as far as those percentages are concerned it was certainly very pleasing to see the form book not go to plan.
Ultimately though, whatever the figures that you quote it’s about the game on the night, and the one statistic that everyone will remember is that The New Saints won 2-0.
Rory Holden, history-maker
As well as The New Saints making history by becoming the first Welsh league side to progress to a group stage/league phase of a UEFA competition, Rory Holden also carved his name into the record books.
When he found the back of the net five minutes before the break, he became the first domestic league player to score at that level of the competition.

Into the final fifteen minutes and The New Saints were awarded a penalty. Up stepped Declan McManus.
Beating the ‘keeper from the spot, he effectively put the game beyond the reach of the visitors.
Having battled injury in recent times, it was the icing on the cake, not only for the club, but also for the striker himself.
The table looks good
It’s not often that sitting in 19th position in a league table would be considered a positive thing, but that’s exactly where The New Saints is, and it’s a case of so far, so good.
The new format for the Conference League is such that 24 clubs from 36 will progress either directly to the round of 16 (the first eight) or will make the play-offs (9th to 24th).
It’s still early days yet though, and with the likes of Apoel, Copenhagen, Panathinaikos and Real Betis currently sitting in the elimination places, Park Hall feet are very much firmly on the ground.
There are still four ‘cup finals’ to come.
A great night for the JD Cymru Premier
It was a great result for The New Saints, of course, but it was also an extremely positive one for Welsh domestic football, as we have now secured the fourth European place for the season after next.
