The New Saints responded to their JD Welsh Cup exit in perfect fashion, as they defeated Caernarfon Town 2-0 at Park Hall.

Craig Harrison’s side were forced to be patient, but late goals from Ben Clark and Jordan Williams eventually secured another important three points for the league leaders.

With Penybont not in action until tomorrow, the Saints extended their JD Cymru Premier lead to 12 points, strengthening their pursuit of a fifth consecutive title in the process.

Things took a while to get going at Park Hall, with neither goalkeeper tested inside the opening 14 minutes.

Former TNS man Connor Roberts came to his side’s rescue with 15 gone though, as he got down low to prevent a flicked effort from Jordan Williams from finding the back of the net.

With 28 minutes on the clock, there was another important piece of defending from Caron Williams, who made a superb sliding challenge inside the penalty area to prevent Josh Daniels from opening the scoring.

Five minutes before the break, Craig Harrison’s side thought they should’ve been awarded a penalty when Ryan Brobbel went down under a challenge from Ryan Sears. Referee Bryn Markham-Jones had a good view of the incident, however, and wasn’t convinced.

As the Saints continued to push for the opener, Jordan Williams sent an effort into the side netting after a good over-the-top ball from Dominic Corness in the 43rd minute.

The sides went into the half-time break with scores level, and four minutes after the restart, Williams sent another effort into the side netting after some good vision from Brobbel.

There was yet another chance for the home side to break the deadlock in the 59th minute when the ball fell kindly for Dan Williams inside the penalty area.

The former Swansea City man appeared to have successfully curled the ball around Roberts, but the Wales C international pulled off a sensational one-handed save to tip the ball onto the right post.

Harrison’s side had a further opening just moments later, but after an inviting cross from Daniels, Jordan Williams failed to keep his first-time effort on target.

Roberts continued his superb form in the 65th minute, getting down quickly to his left to deny Clark with a strong left hand.

But with time running out, the breakthrough finally arrived eight minutes from time. 

Some excellent hold-up play from Jordan Williams created space for Clark, who took a touch to set himself inside the six-yard box, before poking the ball through a crowd of players and into the back of the net.

And with the Canaries pushing bodies forward in search of an equaliser, the Saints added their second of the night with the final kick of the game.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, substitute Adrian Cieslewicz capitalised on a misplaced pass to drive his side forward, before feeding Jordan Williams on the edge of the penalty area.

The former Stockport County man’s strike proved too powerful for Roberts on that occasion, with the full-time whistle sounding as soon as the ball hit the back of the net.

It was the perfect response from Craig Harrison’s side, as they put last weekend’s defeat against Cardiff Met behind them in ideal fashion to move 12 points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier.

The Saints are back at Park Hall next weekend, as they welcome Llandudno in the semi-finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30pm on Saturday, December 6th.
