Goals galore, as The Saints move up to fourth after victory at Abergavenny

The New Saints Women claimed a first away victory of the season at the Pen-Y-Pound Stadium, as Andy Williams’ side got a 4-2 win.

Goals for The New Saints came from Beth Lewis, Izzy Redding, Dani Staley and Caitlin Chapman. Ellis Lunn pulled a couple back for Abergavenny.

It was a scrappy game in which The Saints took their chances and were clinical when the opportunities were presented.

Victory sees the Saints move up to fourth in the Genero Adran Premier table.

The first shot came from The New Saints in the 11th minute. Helen Evans had an attempt from 35-yards that Charlotte Hastings collected.

Megan Stanton had an effort for the Pennies three minutes later which was hit wide from 30-yards out.

Andy Williams’ team took the lead in the 17th. Lexie Harrison got brought down in the 18-yard area and the referee pointed to the spot. Skipper Beth Lewis then stepped up and sent Hastings the wrong way.

It was two for The Saints in the 26th, Chapman crossed a corner in that found Izzy Redding who headed the ball into the top left corner of the net.

Past the half hour mark, Chapman ran in the penalty area and had an effort that Hastings stopped with her feet.

It was three for TNS before the break. Chantelle Teare played a ball across the box and found Dani Staley as the no.8 tapped home from point blank range.

At the start of the second forty-five Evans put a free-kick in from 25-yards out that found Teare at the back post, where the no.9 forced Hastings into a save.

The home team got one back in the 51st. An over-the-top ball was played through to Ellis Lunn who chipped Sarah Parkes from just inside the box.

With twenty to go Chapman hit the side netting as the Oswestry based-side went knocking for a fourth.

Chapman did get the fourth in the 90th minute. Lewis played an over-the-top ball to the no.17, who slotted it past Hastings from close range.

The Butchers got a second consolation late on when Lunn headed the ball in off the rebound after a shot from Ceri Hudson from 25-yards hit the crossbar.

Next week we start our campaign in the FAW Women’s Cup (October 9), as Airbus UK Broughton are the visitors to Park Hall Stadium.
