It’s a departure from JD Cymru Premier action this weekend, as we host Newtown AFC in the JD Welsh Cup on Saturday, January 14. The round four game will see the winners in the hat for the quarter-finals. 

The historic trophy currently resides at Park Hall, with The New Saints beating Penybont FC in last season’s final at Cardiff City Stadium.

Although cruising at 3-0, Rhys Griffith’s side pulled themselves back in the game but couldn’t get the equaliser, with the final score of 3-2 meaning it was TNS that celebrated.

One of the oldest competitions in the world, the Welsh Cup was launched in 1877, when on March 30 the following year, Wrexham beat Druids 1-0 at Acton Park, Wrexham.

Also in the from the off was Oswestry, who got their campaign underway with a 12-0 victory against Chirk, before losing to the eventual winners in the next round. The first game, at Wrexham’s Racecourse ended 1-1, with the replay at Oswestry Cricket Ground finishing 2-0 to the visitors.

Back to Saturday’s game, the The New Saints will be wearing green and white hooped shirts, white shorts and socks, while the Robins will be in all-red.

Huw Jones is the appointed referee and he will be assisted by Kenwyn Hughes and Ceri Williams. John Jones is the fourth official and Nathan Brearley the referee observer.
